Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is the first in a series of occult adventure games by Sierra On-Line. You play as Gabriel Knight, a Shadow Hunter destined to battle supernatural forces of evil. In this game, you become embroiled in a murder investigation in New Orleans, and learn your heritage and calling. The series continues with Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. A new version of the game has also been released, Gabriel Knight: 20th Anniversary.

Day 1

St George's Book Shop

Read the newspaper on the desk. Head into the back room through the curtains. Take the hair gel from your bathroom and the flashlight from the right side of the dresser. Head back to the front of the store and talk to Grace - make sure you ask about messages 4 times to get them all. Grab a book of German poetry from the top left bookshelf, and a book on snakes from the top right bookshelf. Pick up the tweezers and magnifying glass from the right side of the desk. Open the cash register to take a gift certificate. Leave the shop and select the greater New Orleans map.

Grandmother Knight's House

Talk to Gran about everything, then head up to the attic. Pick up the sketchbook and open it in your inventory. Now use the clock - move the dragon to the top and the hands to 3 o'clock, then turn the key. Pick up the photograph and the letter from the secret compartment. Read the letter in your inventory. Go back downstairs and talk to Gran again, specifically about Heinz Ritter.

Police Station

Talk to the desk sergeant and ask about Detective Mosely and some photographs. You will receive the photos after your conversation. Open the envelope in your inventory and look at the photographs.

Jackson Square

After you talk to the desk sergeant in the Police Station, a cop on a motorcycle will arrive at Jackson Square. Go and find the mime, and have him follow you near to the cop, who will get annoyed and chase him away. Use the radio on the cop's motorcycle to find out where the crime scene is.

Crime Scene

After Mosely leaves, look at the lines in the sand, then copy them into your sketchbook. Use your magnifying glass to look at the flattened section of grass on the right, then use your tweezers to pick up the snake scale. Pick up some clay from the shore while you are here, then leave the area.

Police Station

Talk to the desk sergeant about Mosely, then go in and see Mosely. Talk to him about everything, include the patterns around the bodies, and he will agree that you can see the file. Leave the office and tell the female cop to get the file for you. Look at it in your inventory, then put the file in the inbox next to her. Go back and talk to Mosely again about photographs, and suggest a cop/author photograph. After one photo is taken, say you need to go outside and check your hair. Pick up the file and put it through the photocopier, then return the file to the inbox. Go back into the office to get another photo taken, then leave.

Day 2

Read the newspaper then leave.

Police Station

Look at the tools on the photocopier, then adjust the temperature using the thermostat outside Mosely's office (set it at least to 75). Go in and talk to him, and ask him to get you a coffee. While he is gone, steal the badge from his jacket.

Gedde Estate

Use the knocker on the door - ask to see Malia Gedde on official business, then show the butler your police badge. Talk to Malia about everything, then flirt with her to get kicked out.

Jackson Square

Try to talk to the hotdog vendor, then offer him your $20 voucher for a lucky dog. Give this to the boy on the platform, who now owes you a favour. Head north then east to see a man drawing. Go west and then east again, and the man's drawing will blow away. Go west to see it stuck behind the fence. Head south and talk to the boy on the platform, who will get the drawing for you. Give this back to the artist, then also give him the photocopied file and your sketch.

Historical Voodoo Museum

Talk to Dr John about everything in detail.

St Louis Cemetery #1

Talk to the watchman about everything, then pick up the red brick by the tomb. Look at the markings on the side of the tomb, and copy them into your sketchbook.

Moonbeam Residence

Talk to Magentia about everything, and she will dance for you. While she is dancing, steal the snake skin from the cage. Look at this with the magnifying glass in your inventory to see it does not match the scale you found at the crime scene. Show Magentia the sketch of the markings, then leave.

Dixieland Drug Store

After Madame Cazaunoux enters and leaves again, look at the sign on the counter to the left. Talk to the shop owner and you will hear the phrase "Cabrit Sans Cor'".

Ask Grace to research Madame Cazaunoux.

Day 3

St George's Book Shop

Read the newspaper, then talk to Grace twice about your messages, and ask for Ritter's phone number. Go through the curtains, and look at the pieces of paper Grace gave you. Pick up your phone, turn it on, and dial 49093243333 to speak to Wolfgang. Next, phone 5551280 to learn the name of Madame Cazaunoux's dog, then dial the vet on 5556170 and ask about Madame Cazaunoux and then Castro to get her address. Leave the store and select the greater New Orleans map.

Grandmother Knight's House

Talk to your Gran about Wolfgang Ritter.

Jackson Square

Head north and get the reconstructed sketch from the artist. Next go west and when the fortune teller starts dancing, take her veil from her. Pick it up from the ground after the dancing ends. Look at it with your magnifying glass, and look at the scale, then use your tweezers on the scale to get it, and use the magnifying glass on the scale. Give the veil back to the fortune teller.

St Louis Cathedral

Go through the door in the back right of the cathedral. Pick up the black shirt and a white collar from the box on the shelf.

Jackson Square

Talk to the fortune teller again.

Tulane University

After you have slept through the lecture, go through the door in the rear left. Speak to the professor, then give him the reconstructed sketch - he will look into it for you. Also show him the photo of the murder scene while you are here.

Cazaunoux Residence

Knock on the door, but Madame Cazaunoux will refuse to see you no matter what you say. Put on the black shirt and try again, but apparently you need to be better groomed. Use the hair gel and try a third time, and you will be allowed inside. Talk to her about everything - when she asks what Cabrit Sans Cor' means, answer "goat without horns". When you are asked to bless the bracelet, use the clay on it to make a mold.

Dixieland Drug Store

Talk to the owner about animal masks and then about Willy Jr - you need $100 to buy it.

St George's Book Shop

Ask Grace to research the reconstructed sketch, then wait for Bruno to enter the shop. Sell him the painting for $100.

Dixieland Drug Store

Give the money to the shop owner and he will give you the mask and some gambling oil.

St Louis Cemetery #1

Head east twice and you will talk to Malia. Go west twice to leave the cemetery.

Police Station

Go into Mosely's office and watch the interrogation, then leave again.

Napoleon House

Talk to the bartender about everything, then give the gambling oil to Sam (the guy playing chess in the purple jacket). Convince him to drink it, then give your clay mold to him.

Day 4

St George's Book Shop

Grace will give you a newspaper clipping. Read the newspaper, then leave the store.

Napoleon House

Sam will give you the bracelet - leave after you get it.

Jackson Square

You will see Crash walking around here looking shifty, but he won't talk to you.

Jackson Square Overlook

Look through the left set of binoculars and you will see Crash talking to a drummer down in Jackson Square.

St Louis Cathedral

Try talking to Crash but he still won't say anything. Show him your bracelet, then talk to him, particularly about the drummer and Voodoo Hounfour. After he dies, look at him, open his shirt, and copy his tattoo into your sketchbook.

Day 5

St George's Book Shop

After Grace gives you the package and you receive the phone call, ask Grace to research Rada drums. Read the letter and journal in your inventory, then read the newspaper, before leaving the store.

Historical Voodoo Museum

Once the snake drops on you, quickly flip the light switch near the door.

Tulane University

Go to Hartridge's office to find he is dead. Take the notes from his desk then leave the university.

St George's Book Shop

Grace will pick a snake scale off your face and put it in the ashtray. Pick it up with your tweezers, then examine it with your magnifying glass. Examine the original scale from the murder scene again and you will see that they match.

St Louis Cemetery #1

Look at the new markings, and copy them into your sketchbook. Compare the two sketches in your inventory. Now you need to have Dr John (DJ) bring the small ritual coffin from the museum, so you need to write a message of your own on the tomb. Use the red brick on the tomb (when the watchman has walked away) to write DJBRINGSEKEYMADOULE.

Police Station

Enter Mosely's office and talk to him about Hartridge's death and Crash's death. Ask him to reopen the case. Give him Hartridge's notes, the newspaper clipping, your reconstructed sketch and the two snake scales. Leave the station.

Day 6

St George's Book Shop

Pick up the envelope and open it, then read the note from Mosely. Read the newspaper, then show your sketch of the tattoo to Grace.

Jackson Square

Go north and use the Rada drum book on the drummer. Select the phrases "call conclave", "tonight" and "swamp". Next go south and west, and talk to the vendor. Convince him to go back to his previous post at Royal and Conti.

Police Station

The officers will all leave the station temporarily to buy beignets from the vendor you just sent there. While they are gone, open the swinging door and use Mosely's key to get into his office. Note: you may need to use a CPU slowdown program if you are running a fast computer in order to get past this point. If you miss your chance, you can still sneak through the swinging doors while the desk sergeant has a very quick nap after eating. Once in the office, open the desk drawer and look inside, then pick up the trackers.

Historical Voodoo Museum

Put a tracker inside the sekey madoule near the front door.

Bayou St John

Use the tracker device on yourself, then use the grid in the bottom right of the screen to navigate through the forest - just move in the direction of the flashing dot. You will eventually find the entrance to a clearing. Put the crocodile mask on then you will walk into the clearing. Answer Dr John's questions with "Damballah" and "Ogoun Badagris".

Day 7

St George's Book Shop

Use your phone to dial Wolfgang on 49093243333, and ask him about Tetelo and the other new options. Exit your bedroom, read the newspaper, then leave the store.

St Louis Cemetery #1

Head east twice, and press the red button to enter the Geddes tomb. Use your flashlight to look around, and open the middle drawer to find Mosely. After you wake up, open the same drawer again and take the wallet. Open the wallet in your inventory to find a credit card. Press the button to leave the tomb, then leave the cemetery.

St George's Book Shop

Go to the back room and use the phone to dial 5851130. Book tickets to Rittersberg using Mosely's credit card. Leave the store and go to the airport.

Schloss Ritter

Go east through the archway into the chapel, and look at the stained glass window, the pews and the panels on the walls. Go back and talk to Gerde about the Chapel Panels and the Initiation Ceremony, then pick up the salt shaker near her, and the dagger from the left wall. Go back into the chapel to look at the panels again:

  • hands and water
  • hair and a knife
  • chalice on table, ocean waves
  • knife and blood
  • someone kneeling
  • a scroll

Head upstairs to the bedroom. Pick up the scissors and pot from the dresser, and use the scissors on yourself. Take the scroll from the cabinet left of the mirror here. Next, open the window and wash your hands in the snow (operate the snow, don't pick it up). Look at the inscription just above the door to the left, then go back downstairs. Ask Gerde about the Portal Poem, then enter the chapel again. Put the pot on the altar, then use the dagger on yourself, followed by the salt shaker on the pot. Use the altar to kneel before it, then use the scroll on yourself.

Day 8

Schloss Ritter

Pick up the large brass key on the chest near your bed, then use this to get through the door to the left and you will be in the library. Look at the middle section of the rear bookcase, then pick up the geography book that caught your eye. Next look at the top right section of the rear bookcase, and pick up the sociology book. Next find a history book from the top of the left bookcase, then a book on religion from the left section of the rear bookcase, and finally a book on snake mounds from the bottom right of the rear bookcase. Head back to Gerde and give her the book, saying you can pay with your credit card.

Day 9

Snake Mound

Walk towards the mound to enter the outer circle. There are twelve rooms here, arranged in the shape of a clock face, each with a number 1-12. Walking north effectively takes you forward one hour in the clock. Keep walking forward and picking up tiles from the wall/floor until you have 10. Also collect the silver snake rod from the floor of one of the rooms. Now keep walking north until you find the room with the mouth on the wall and a stuck tile. Look at this tile to see it has 7 snakes on it - this is room 7. Head north, and examine the tiles in your inventory until you find the one with 8 snakes - put this in the wall of this room. Continue around the clock and insert the appropriate tile into each wall.

Now get ready to dodge some mummies. Go to room 3 and insert the rod in the middle of the tile. Quickly go north twice, then in the next room head to the right wall, wait for the mummy to approach, then dodge past and continue north. In this room grab the vines and swing north. Now wait for the conversation to end, and quickly use the rod in the hole behind the open panel.

Head east and look at the carvings on the side of the sacrificial table. Look at the lid of the table, then get the two iron bars from the wall. Operate the bars to open the lid. Head west as instructed and use the dagger on the dead creature.

Day 10

St George's Book Shop

Pick up the envelope from the desk and you will read Malia's note. Talk to Mosely in the bedroom, and you will give him the tracker at the end of the conversation. Leave the bedroom and read the newspaper before leaving the store for the last time.

St Louis Cathedral

Walk into the confessional on the left, and insert the rod into the knothole in the back wall. Put the rod and the tracker under the seat before leaving. Use the keypad to the right to enter the outer ring. Head south twice and use the keypad to enter an office. Pick up the black record book and read it in your inventory. Leave the office. Go north 3 times and use the keypad to find a storeroom. Pick up the wolf mask and boar mask, and two robes from the rack behind. Exit the storeroom and go east twice to find the inner circle.

Use a set of drums, and with the first book select the word "Summon" then from the next book "Brother Eagle". Go out through the northeast exit, then continue west to reach the outer circle again. Go north once and use the keypad. Take the plastic card from Dr John's room (he should now be in the inner circle). Go south and try the keypad, but it is locked. Use the plastic card here to enter the money room. Pick up some money, then leave the room.

Go south twice and use the plastic card to enter the morgue. Look at the body and other bits and pieces around the room, then go back outside. Go south 3 times and use the card to enter Grace's room. Use the talisman on Grace to wake her up. Give the boar mask to Mosely, and wear the wolf mask yourself.

In the ritual, show the talisman to Malia when you get the chance, then throw it to Mosely. Grab the idol from Malia's hand, then try to grab Malia before she falls.
