Return of the Phantom is a classic 3rd person point-and-click adventure from MicroProse, and is based on the book Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. You take the role of detective Raoul Montand, charged with investigating the collapse of a magnificant chandelier from the top of an opera house. Your investigations lead you back in time, to find the origins of the mysterious Phantom who haunts the opera.

Present Day

After the introduction, walk right and talk to Monsieur Brie. Continue right to the orchestra pit, then go through the door to find a room beneath the stage. Climb up the steps and look through the Prompter's Box to see the Phantom on the stage. Go back down the steps and push the lever on the right wall, then pull the prompter's stand so it is beneath the trapdoor. Climb up through the trapdoor to reach the stage.

Head left across the stage and exit stage left. Talk to Charles, then go back to the stage and exit stage right. Pick up the yellow frame, then continue right to the backstage area. Head through the door at the top of the screen, then climb up 2 flights of stairs and head through the door on the left. Look at the plant on the table, then go through the left door. Talk to Christine to receive a note, then leave the room. Return right to the stairwell and go down one flight. Go through the door here, then go through the right door. Talk to Julie, then leave the room. Return to the stairwell again and go back down to the backstage area.

Try to go down the circular staircase, then pick up the sandbag. Now climb down the staircase and pick up the red frame. Climb up to the top of the circular staircase to reach a catwalk. Go left and take the blue frame, then continue left and look at the chandelier cable. Take the note to read it.

Novice Difficulty

Go left again and pick up the green frame.

Return to the right until you reach the circular staircase and go down to the backstage area again. Go left to the stage left area, then down to the stage and through the trapdoor. Climb down then walk left to the orchestra pit, left down the aisle and into the foyer. Continue left and through the middle door into the library. Look at the glass case on the right, then the bookcase on the left. Find and take the book to read it. Next head through the left door and talk to Monsieur Brie again.

Five Minutes Later

Go through the left door to find Christine's body. Leave the room and head right to the stairwell, then climb down the stairs to the ground floor and walk down to the backstage area. Climb up the circular staircase and go left until you find the Phantom.

The Past

After your conversation, go left, exit stage left and continue left again. Pick up the cable hook from the ground. Go to stage right and pick up the yellow frame, then return right to the backstage area. Climb up the circular staircase and go left. Pick up the blue frame.

Novice Difficulty

Continue left twice more and get the green frame.

Return all the way right to the circular staircase and climb down twice. Pick up the red frame and take the lantern from the table, then climb down once more. Look at the mannequins here, then take the rope from the box before climbing back up one flight. Go through the door on the left and talk to Jacques; make sure you remember which piece of music the Phantom likes. Now head left until you reach the foyer, and talk to Edgar Degas. Go through the left door into Monsieur Richard's office and talk to him, then return down to the foyer.

Head just to the right and through the right door to go upstairs. Talk to Madame Giry, who needs objects from your own time (you have these already so she will unlock box 5 when you finish talking). Enter box 5 and take the crumpled note, then look at the left column and try to use the panel to find it is locked. Look at the keyhole, then exit the box. Head left to the foyer, then right until you reach the circular staircase. Head up one flight, then through the door in the back. Go upstairs twice and through the door on the left. Go through the left door and talk to Christine. After the conversation, leave the room and you will automatically listen outside the door. Take the fire axe to break back inside.

Later That Evening

Talk to Monsieur Richard, then leave the room by going down. Head left through the archway and talk to the ticket seller to get an envelope. Open this to get a ticket and a piece of paper, and read both items. Head right through the archway, then through the right door to head upstairs. Talk to Madame Giry, saying you do have a ticket, then enter box 9 and sit down.

One Hour Later

Talk to Monsieur Richard, then go left to the foyer, right through the archway and down the aisle, through the orchestra pit and right into the trap room. Look at Jacques' body, then take the key from the floor next to him. Go all the way back to the foyer, then through the right door to head upstairs, and enter box 5. Look at the hidden door and put your key in the keyhole. Walk through the panel, then go to the lower level. Turn on your lantern, then save your game.

After replying to Christine, sit down at the organ and play the piece of music mentioned earlier. Head through the door to see Christine is trapped. Look at the skull face to see a keyhole, and use your skeleton key to unlock it. At the bottom left is a row of skulls; push the 3rd skull from the right to open the sarcophagus and free Christine. Talk to her and she will give you her ring.

Go left and the Phantom will appear. Use your sword to attack him. Take the music score from the organ, then exit through the left door. Take the oar from against the wall, then go left again and climb into the boat.

Go through the door on the left, then exit at the middle level to return to box 5. After Christine is kidnapped yet again, go back through the hidden panel and up to the top level.
