The Crimson Diamond is an old-school graphical adventure with a text parser and 16-color graphics. You play as Nancy Maple, a clerk and amateur geologist sent on assignment to the town of Crimson, Ontario, where a local fisherman has discovered a diamond inside a fish he caught in the river. There are 26 Steam Achievements, all documented in the walkthrough below.

Tutorial

You will get an achievement for starting the game Welcome to Crimson!. Play through the tutorial completely, just following the prompts you are provided Thanks for completing the tutorial!.

Chapter 1

Introductions

Talk to Kimi. Open the drawer (1/42) and take out a brochure. You can look at this to see a map of the lodge. Open the door and walk out into the hallway, then open the door immediately opposite and go through to the innkeeper's quarters. Open the wardrobe (2/42), the left nightstand (3/42) and the right nightstand (4/42). Open the pink door and head through it.

Talk to the woman here (Margot). Walk down into the walk-in closet. Open the wardrobe (5/42), the left drawers (6/42) and the right drawers (7/42). Go all the way back out to the hallway, then walk down. Open the door on the right and head inside. Open the dresser (8/42). Exit to the hallway again.

Go down and open the door on the right, then head inside. Talk to Albert, then go back out to the hallway. Open the left door and go through. On the right of the back wall, open the cupboard (9/42) and drawers (10/42). In the middle of the back wall, open the wardrobe (11/42) and drawer (12/42). On the left of the back wall, open the left cupboard (13/42), the drawers (14/42) and the right cupboard (15/42). Leave this room.

Walk down along the hallway, then open the left door and enter the linen closet. Open the wardrobe (16/42) then leave the room and continue down along the hallway. Open the left door and enter the bathroom. Open the medicine cabinet (17/42). Close the door and remove your clothes. Turn on the tap in the bathroom, then open the shower valve.

Save your game, then take a shower Please be more careful!.

Load your game and lock the bathroom door. Now take a shower Fresh and clean!. Exit the shower, turn off the tap and get dressed. Unlock the door, open the door and return to the hallway. Go back up and then head right down the stairs to the ground floor.

Walk down and open the door on the right, then go through into the mud room. On the left side, open the locker (18/42) and drawer (19/42). On the right side, open the locker (20/42) and drawer (21/42). Return to the hallway and you will see that the door on the left is open. Walk over towards it and listen to the conversation from outside the room, then go through the open door. Open the small cupboard (22/42). Talk to the man (Corvus) and the woman (Nessa). Return to the hallway.

Go up once and open the door on the left, then go through into the powder room. Open the cupboard (23/42) then leave the room again. Go up again and open the door on the left, then proceed into a closet. Open the wardrobe (24/42) and cupboard (25/42). Leave this room and go all the way up to the far end of the hallway to find the conservatory. Listen to the conversation from outside the room, then go through the open door. Open the drawer (26/42). Talk to the man on the blue sofa (Evan) and the man in the chair on the left (Nathan).

Leave the conservatory and open the left door, then enter the study. Along the far wall, open the cabinet (27/42) and the drawers (28/42). Return to the hallway and go down once. Open the glass doors on the right and enter the dining room. On the left of the far wall, open the cabinet (29/42), the drawers (30/42), the left cupboard (31/42) and the right cupboard (32/42). In the middle of the far wall, open the left buffet cupboard (33/42) and the right buffet cupboard (34/42).

Save your game, then drink the whiskey on the buffet 5 times Overindulged!.

Load your game and go through the top door from this room to find the kitchen. Talk to Jack - if you have spoken to everybody else, you can now head down into the dining room to have dinner. After the meal is over, stand up and leave by going left. Walk down along the hallway until you can head upstairs, then go up once and through the right door into the servant's quarters. Open the wardrobe (35/42) and drawer (36/42) on the left. Open the nightstand (37/42) near the bed.

Leave here and go back downstairs, then go to the study. Quickly hide behind the tapestry in the corner of the room and watch the scene that unfolds. Open the door and go across the hall - open the door to the kitchen and go inside. Help Jack and he will then leave. On the left of the far wall open the cupboards (38/42). In the middle of the far wall, open the cupboard (39/42) and the drawers (40/42). On the right of the wall, open the left cupboards (41/42) and the right cupboards (42/42). There is an achievement for opening all of these listed items RANSACKER.

Take a glass from the cupboards here. Go back out to the hallway and go down twice, then listen to the door on the right (listen with the glass if the door is closed). Now head upstairs and into the innkeeper's quarters. Listen at the pink door, then listen with the glass Chapter 1: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 2

Excursions

After Kimi leaves your room, go across the hall into the innkeeper's quarters. Open the pink door and go through. Talk to Margot, then ask her about aches and allergies. Return out to the hallway and listen with your glass to the guest bedroom 3 door. Now head downstairs to the entrance and you will leave with Kimi. You will shortly return and be left alone again, commenting that you need to find the following:

  • streak plate
  • ice pick
  • trowel
  • hammer
  • 3 samples

Go to the kitchen and take a plate from the cupboard over the sink, then look at it to find your streak plate. Take the kettle from the stove. Open the icebox and look at the ice inside. Pour the kettle onto the ice. Take the handle to get an ice pick. Return the kettle to the stove. Open the door to the right and head outside.

Continue right to find a shed. Open the doors and walk inside. Look at the tools and take the trowel. Also take the rope and flypaper. Return back inside the lodge. Go to the study and listen with your glass at the door. After Jack comes out, enter the study. Go to the fireplace and look at it, then take the tape.

Head back out to the hallway, then walk all the way down and out through the front doors. Continue down, left and down to find the boathouse. Go around to the left side of the boathouse and approach the river, then dig with your trowel to get a river sample (1/9). Now open the side door and go inside. Open the tackle box and take the hammer.

From the boathouse, go right twice. Examine the log and pick up the whistle, which turns out to be a duck call. Now head left 3 times to find Kimi.

Save your game, then walk into the river WATERY GRAVE.

Load your game and try to take a sample from the rocks, but Kimi won't let you. Blow the duck call to make Kimi leave. Now you can take a cliff sample (2/9) from the rocks. Walk up and talk to Albert, then ask him about the rock and he will leave. Try to take the field kit. Take a glacial sample (3/9) from the rock. Return right twice and up to the lodge. Go to the kitchen and ask Albert about the field kit. Now you need to work with your samples:

  • Look at the river sample
  • Look at the cliff sample
  • Look at the glacial sample
  • Examine the river sample
  • Examine the cliff sample
  • Examine the glacial sample
  • Rub the river sample on plate
  • Rub the cliff sample on plate
  • Rub the glacial sample on plate

Head down into the dining room to have dinner. Jack with give you a bowl of broth for Margot. Head out near the conservatory and listen on the conversation here. Go upstairs to the innkeeper's quarters, then through the pink door. Give the broth to Margot, then walk around behind the screen on the right to listen to another conversation. Pick up the bowl, then head back to the kitchen and give it to Jack Chapter 2: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 3

Investigations

Talk to Nessa and ask about the ruby. Examine the jewelry box, then leave the room. Go up the hallway towards the innkeeper's quarters and listen at the doorway, then go inside. Look at the right nightstand, then pick up the adhesive plaster. Go down through the pink door and pick up the powder compact from the vanity (unfortunately it is empty).

Next go to guest bedroom 1 to find the curio cabinet has been smashed. Examine this. Get some soot from the fireplace and fill the compact with soot. Go across to the innkeeper's quarters and ask for fingerprints, but you won't get any. Return to guest bedroom 1 and dust the curio, then lift the fingerprint.

Return to the innkeeper's quarters and down through the pink door. Dust the glass, then lift the fingerprint. Now go over to guest bedroom 2. Talk to Corvus, then search the bin next to his desk and take a paper. Head across to guest bedroom 3. Ask Nessa for a fingerprint. Dust the jewelry box, then lift the fingerprint.

Head downstairs and enter the billiards room through the glass doors on the left of the hallway. Pick up a cue and hit the white ball into the pocket. Repeat this a second time and you will pick up the ball. Dust the ball, then lift the fingerprint. Leave the room (you will automatically replace the cue and ball).

Enter the kitchen and take a raw cookie from the tray on the table. Go down to the dining room and take the wax from the bases of the candles. Go back to the kitchen and take the blue mug from the open cabinet on the left. Put the wax into the mug, then heat the mug on the stove. Put the wax onto your cookie. Open the icebox and put the cookie inside - after a while you will take it back out again. Eat the cookie to be left with a fingerprint. While you are here, pick up a baked cookie and put salt on it. Also open the icebox again and take some ice.

Go to the conservatory. Ask Nathan for a fingerprint and he will give you one. Ask Kimi for a fingerprint but she will refuse. Put the ice in her tea. When she says that it has gone cold, pick up the mug. Dust the mug, then lift the fingerprint. Fill the mug with tea, then give it back to Kimi. Go upstairs again and enter the servant's quarters. Talk to Albert and ask him for a fingerprint, but he will refuse. Give the cookie to Albert. After giving him his drink, dust the glass and lift the fingerprint.

Compare the fingerprints Chapter 3: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 4

Tensions

Examine Margot, then specifically examine her skin, nails and mouth. Smell her mouth to detect the scent of garlic. Search the robe and take the key. Examine her hair and take some hair. Now exit the close-up and leave the cellar. Go in through the kitchen door, then make your way towards the study. Listen to a conversation in this room using your glass. Now head out through the front doors. Walk down twice to reach the bridge over the river. Hide behind the tree on the left to listen to a conversation between Jack and Nathan.

From here, go up, left twice and up twice to reach the gazebo. Walk to the far left to hide behind a tree and listen to a conversation between Nessa and Albert. Walk down twice and right 3 times, then talk to Kimi, asking her about Nessa. Next go left 3 times and up to reach the carriage house. Go inside to see Nathan, then immediately climb the ladder to be able to listen to a conversation between Jack and Nathan. Climb back down and talk to Nathan. Ask him about the lodge and the lands, then go back outside and head down twice and right to the boathouse. Go inside and hide in the canoe to listen to a conversation between Nathan and Albert.

Leave the boathouse and go right. Follow Nessa up, right, up and right. Hide behind a tree to listen to a conversation between Nessa and Corvus. Go down to the smokehouse and open the door, then go inside. Take some rock salt. Go back outside and head down to find a waterfall. Tie the rope to the tree then to yourself. Look at the jar in the water, then take it. Look at the jar and examine it, then dust the jar. Compare your fingerprints to find that the print on the jar belongs to Nessa.

Continue right to the jetty and try to talk to Evan. Go right again to reach the waterfall. Tie the rope to the tree then to yourself. Look at the jar in the water, then take it. Look at the jar and examine it, then dust the jar. Compare your fingerprints to find that the print on the jar belongs to Nessa. Go left and try to talk to Evan on the jetty. Continue left 3 times and up twice. Use your glass to listen to a conversation between Jack and Ranger Murdoch.

Go right and open the pink parlour door, then go inside. Take some almonds from the table here. Make your way to the study and there will be papers on the floor near the desk. Close and open the left drawer (1/6), the left cupboard (2/6), the right drawer (3/6) and the right cupboard (4/6). Look at the papers and at the shoeprint. Dust the papers. Compare your fingerprints to find that the print on the papers belongs to Nessa. Head across to the kitchen. Now you need to work with your new sample:

  • Look at the rock salt
  • Examine the rock salt
  • Rub the rock salt on plate

Fill your mug with water. Put the salt in the mug, then empty the mug in the sink. Repeat the sample assessment:

  • Look at the rock salt
  • Examine the rock salt
  • Rub the rock salt on plate

Fill the mug with water again, as you will need it again soon. Go upstairs and into guest bedroom 3. Talk to Nessa, and ask her about the jar and the papers. Next go to guest bedroom 2. Talk to Corvus and ask him about the poison. Open the flypaper box in your inventory and examine it to see the label. Go to the innkeeper's quarters and through the pink door.

Pick up the glass, look at it and examine it. Unlock the vanity (using the key from Margot's robe). Open the drawers, then search the drawers to find a slim wooden box. Open the box and examine the label. Dust the ampoule, handle, bottle, metal box and pamphlet. Examine the pamphlet, then open it. Read the pamphlet, then examine the paragraph. Dust the pamphlet and examine it again. Compare your fingerprints again to make some deductions. Go across to guest bedroom 1, and you will see both Albert and Kimi briefly. Pour water on the fire in the fireplace, then take the map. Examine Kimi's map.

Return downstairs to the kitchen and ask Jack about the kit. Head down into the dining room Chapter 4: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 5

Escalations

Look at the jetty. Examine the liquid, scuffs and shoeprints. Examine the glass, then dust the glass and lift the fingerprint. Also examine the decanter, then dust the decanter and lift the fingerprints. Compare your fingerprints again.

Walk up and look around. Examine the liquid. Examine the scuffs and shoeprints at both the bottom and right parts of the scene. Examine the tree branch and the hairs, then take the hairs. Go right to the smokehouse. Look at the ground and pick up the button, then examine it. Dust the button. Examine the scuffs and shoeprints. Open the door and go inside - Nathan will ask you to leave again.

Head down and left twice to reach the bridge. Examine the shoeprints on the shore to the left and right sides of the bridge. Head left twice and examine the shoeprints near the shore here..

Return to the lodge and go to the mudroom. Examine the women's boots and the men's boots. Go back to the study and examine the shoeprints on the papers again. Now head upstairs. Enter the linen closet and you will find Ranger Murdoch, but he will leave. Go across to the servant's quarters and listen with your glass to hear a conversation between Ranger Murdoch and Albert. Enter the room and examine the shoes. Enter guest bedroom 2 and examine the shoes near the bed. Now head to the spare room. Tell Ranger Murdoch about the murder and about Margot's illness.

Go back outside to the smokehouse. Head inside and you will tell Nathan everything. Examine the floor and the wall. Smell the symbol to find it is raspberry jam. Next examine the table and the almonds. Dust the almonds and examine the fingerprint. Take the almond fingerprint and take the almonds. Compare the fingerprints and you will make some more conclusions.

Return to the lodge and go upstairs. Enter the innkeeper's quarters and go through the pink door. Listen at the next doorway to overhear a conversation between Nessa and Corvus. Go back to guest bedroom 2 and try to open the satchel on the bed - it is locked. Search the desk, right bed, rug, left bed and bookshelf. Next go to the bathroom and fill your mug with water. Return through the innkeeper's quarters to Corvus. Look at Corvus, then spill water on him. After he returns, go to guest bedroom 2 and search Corvus' clothes, then take the satchel key. Unlock the satchel and open it, then search the satchel. Take the will and examine it. Take the report and examine it. Now make sure you close the satchel and lock it, then return the key to the clothes.

Head downstairs into the study. Ask Jack about almonds, garlic, arsenic, steins and cookies. Ask Nathan about the ranger, ranger's meeting, the report and the will. The pair will leave and then return.

Go back upstairs to the innkeeper's quarters, then through the pink door and down to the walk-in closet. Search the yellow, green, blue and teal hats - you will find the ruby brooch. Dust the brooch, then look at the brooch and examine it. Return to the study and ask Jack about the brooch, then talk to Jack and Nathan - they will both leave again.

Enter the servant's quarters to find that Albert has left. Open the left desk drawers (5/6) and the right desk drawers (6/6) COMPLETE RANSACKER. Search the left desk drawers to find a cigar butt. Pick this up and examine it, then dust it. Look under the bed and pick up the cylinder (which turns out to be dynamite). Examine it and dust it. Examine the clothes and take the ticket stub, then dust it and examine it. Examine the books. Search the bin, then pick up the papers and examine them. Dust the papers and examine them again. Pick up the tape from next to the bin and examine it.

Leave this room and go across to the linen closet. Search the blue trunk. Take the bullet and blasting cap. Examine the blasting cap, then dust it and examine it again. Try dusting the bullet as well. Examine the padlock and take it, then dust it and examine it again. Make your way outside to the carriage house Chapter 5: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 6

Confrontations

Pick up the wire and plunger. Dust and examine them both. Attach the blasting cap to the dynamite, then attach the wire to the blasting cap. Try to cut the wire, but you don't have any wirecutters. Ask Jack for wirecutters. Cut the wire, then attach the wire to the plunger.

Save your game, then push the plunger while standing next to Jack KABOOM. You will also kill Jack in the process COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

Load your game and place the dynamite in the rubble. Take the plunger behind the rock, then push the plunger. Take a rubble sample from the right. Now work with this sample:

  • Look at the rubble sample
  • Examine the rubble sample
  • Rub the rubble sample on plate

Now enter the cave (Jack will give you a lantern so you can see). Walk right a little until you see a path heading down.

Save your game, then go down along the path here SLIP AND SLIDE. Load your game and go slightly further right, then up through a wooden archway LIKE A TON OF BRICKS. Load your game and go far to the right onto the next screen SHADOWS AND DARKNESS.

Load your game and go right to the first fork. Examine the path, then the shoeprints. Take a crystal sample from the rock just to the right. Examine the machine, then take some discarded rocks and coarse garnet. Continue to the next fork and examine the shoeprints again. Now you can safely go right and you will not get lost this time.

Once you reach the cavern, hide behind the rock. Pick up a plain rock. Work with all of your new samples:

  • Look at the plain rock
  • Look at the discarded rocks
  • Look at the coarse garnet
  • Look at the crystal sample
  • Examine the plain rock
  • Examine the discarded rocks
  • Examine the coarse garnet
  • Examine the crystal sample
  • Rub the plain rock on plate
  • Rub the discarded rocks on plate
  • Rub the coarse garnet on plate
  • Rub the crystal sample on plate

Now rub the ruby brooch on the plate. Finally you must do something else with all of your collected samples:

  • Rub the river sample on ruby brooch
  • Rub the cliff sample on ruby brooch
  • Rub the glacial sample on ruby brooch
  • Rub the rock salt on ruby brooch
  • Rub the rubble sample on ruby brooch
  • Rub the plain rock on ruby brooch
  • Rub the discarded rocks on ruby brooch
  • Rub the coarse garnet on ruby brooch
  • Rub the crystal sample on ruby brooch

Save your game, as there are multiple endings coming up, which depend upon your actions at this point. You can take any of these options:

  1. Walk directly out towards the fire. You will be tied up and Evan will be killed.
  2. Throw your rock down the passage. Take the almonds, then do nothing while Nessa ties you up.
  3. Throw your rock down the passage. Walk over and take the lantern before Nessa reaches you. When Nessa is hanging to the rock edge, choose to leave.
  4. Throw your rock down the passage. Walk over and take the lantern before Nessa reaches you. When Nessa is hanging to the rock edge, choose to save her. Padlock Nessa to the wheelbarrow.

No matter which option you choose, you will end up back at the train station Chapter 6: COMPLETE!.

Chapter 7

Conclusions

When you reach your bedroom you will make notes on a series of questions:

After eating breakfast you will end up back at the train station. You will be asked by Professor Plumber whether there is evidence of diamonds in Crimson, and you can answer either way, affecting the ending:

You will now see an ending that includes receiving a newspaper based on the options you selected in the final chapters:

  • If you said "No" to Professor Plumber and saved Nessa then padlocked her in the mine EXTRA! EXTRA! 1/4.
  • If you said "No" to Professor Plumber and let Nessa escape from the mine EXTRA! EXTRA! 2/4.
  • If you said "No" to Professor Plumber and let Nessa fall in the mine EXTRA! EXTRA! 3/4.
  • If you said "Yes" to Professor Plumber EXTRA! EXTRA! 4/4.

If you provide all of the available evidence to help solve Margot's murder, you will receive a letter the next morning and will travel to Skagway. Dig under the bush using your trowel. You will get an achievement if you fully examined all 9 samples NOT IN A MUSEUM. You will then set sail FOR MARGOT.

No matter which ending you get, the game will soon be over Chapter 7: COMPLETE!
