Still Life is a first-person mystery adventure game where you play as 2 separate protagonists: Victoria McPherson, an FBI agent in modern day Chicago, and her grandfather Gus McPherson, a private investigator in Prague in the 1920s. Both are investigating murder cases, and Victoria realizes that the two crimes appear to be linked. Gus was the lead character in the earlier game Post Mortem. The series continues with the sequel, Still Life 2.

Chapter 1: The Anatomy Lesson

5th Murder Scene

Talk to the cop at the entrance to the building, then head inside. Go straight up the stairs and talk to Miller, who is next to the fridge. He will give you a camera. Head to the end of the hall and talk to Claire, who gives you a job to do. Get the equipment from her briefcase on the kitchen counter, and you will drink the final coffee, so now your hands are free. Put the film in the camera.

Now you need to collect 5 pieces of evidence from the crime scene. In the room to the left with the hanging dolls, look at the nails on the wall to the left of the doorway. Talk a photograph, then collect the hair and fibre sample.

Go back towards where you met Miller, and in the room just before you get there, look at the blood stain on the floor. Take a photograph, then get a sample with a swab. While you are in this room, look at the back wall. Spray some Luminol on the wall, then go over to the lights and attach your black light filter. Take a photograph of the message on the wall, then retrieve your filter. Go through the doorway on the right to find a room with a skull painted on the wall. Go through the same steps with the blood stain on the floor and the hidden message on the wall.

Return to Claire and talk to her - she wants you to put your evidence in her briefcase. Go and do that, then speak to her again. After the cutscene, look at the body to see the tattoos and stab wounds.

Walk back towards Miller and you will almost fall when the stairs collapse. Go down the end of this corridor to see a door that has been boarded up. Return to the room where you saw "sanctuary" written on the wall and pick up the lead pipe from the water heater on the right. Use this to get through the boarded door. Outside, try the ladder, then jump on the container to the left. Get in your car and head to the office.

The Office

Walk right and go up in the elevator to the 8th floor. Head across the hallway and talk to Miller at his desk. Go to your desk (the other one in the same room) and check out your phone message. Pick up the present and the security card, then look at the back of the card to see 2 pieces of information: 583 and VODKA.

Back in the hall, put your camera in the chute, then go to the elevator. After your talk with Tate, get in the elevator and go to B2. Go to the double doors and try to get through, but you need to use the card reader to the right. Insert your card, then type 86352 (VODKA) and you will enter the morgue. Talk to Claire, then take the report from the table. Go back up in the elevator and give the report to Miller. Go down in the elevator to B1 and head back to your car. Get in and drive to your Dad's house.

Pat's House

You will receive a necklace as a gift from your father - it contains a heart symbol centrally, and two diamonds on either side. Go upstairs and enter the room to the right, then go into your closet. You can't reach the attic. Head back downstairs and grab the red umbrella from the stand to the right. Go back into the closet and use the umbrella to pull down the trapdoor. Climb up into the attic and turn on the light.

Look at the chest in the back of the room. You need to get it to display the same pattern of symbols as the necklace. The red button resets the symbols. To get the correct pattern, press the second, fourth and fifth symbols 3 times each, then press the third symbol once. Press the red button to open the chest.

Chapter 2: The Persistence of Memory

Shore

After talking to Skalnic, walk right and talk to Stasek the police officer. Keep going this direction and you will talk to Ida; also talk to Milena here to find out some more about the local working girls. Go up the stairs and talk to Ida again, who gives you a map. Get in your car and try to drive to the chapel.

Lingerie

You will automatically end up here, and overhear a conversation between Kubina and Peter - apparently Peter's brother Roman is missing. Leave the area again.

Old Chapel

Enter the chapel and talk to Korona, the coroner. He will let you take his report, but can't remember the combination for the safe. Go over to the bookcase and pick up the small piece of paper, on which is written 74821536. Now head to the altar. There are 8 tiles and 8 positions into which they can be placed. The number corresponding to each tile is governed by the number of angles on each of the symbols; just order them according to the piece of paper, then pull the handle to open the safe. You will collect the report and a photograph. Leave the chapel, and you will be beaten up by Peter.

Park

Talk to Apolina at the entrance, then walk through to the fountain area. After your vision, go into your inventory and use the photograph. Notice the black scratches on the right side of the base of the fountain, and click on this area to approach it. Look at the writing. Now look up at the angel on the fountain - a raven will steal the ring and fly away. You will automatically run after it to your next location.

Burned Neighborhood

Enter the building and talk to the coachman, who will give you some information and return the ring. Leave the building and Ida will talk to you, and tell you of someone who survived an attack. Leave this area.

Junkyard

Head down the street and around to the left. Unfortunately Peter is guarding the gate, so you'll have to come back later.

Lingerie

Knock on the door here and talk to Kubina. He agrees to move Peter away if you free Roman from jail.

Police Station

Look at the noticeboard and take the newspaper article - read it in you inventory if you like. Talk to the police officer, and he agrees to free Roman if you retrieve his medal from Apolina.

Park

Talk to Apolina again and she gives you the medal.

Police Station

Give the medal back to Stasek and he will free Roman.

Lingerie

You will arrive at the end of a conversation between Kubina and Roman. Peter will now leave you alone; Kubina also gives you a lock picking kit.

Junkyard

Go and talk to the large men, and you will end up running away from a hungry dog. Go around the control booth and pick up the cutters. Look at the panel on the wall here, and move the levers around so that 123 are at the top, and 456 at the bottom in that order. Now enter the booth and use the controls. Move the two single crates to the south of the stacked crates. Head outside and jump over the single crates to reach the stacked ones. Cut the chain with your cutters. Go back into the control booth and move the crates again - leave the first crate where it is, and line the others up in a straight line to the west. Now walk over these to reach the tram cars.

Chapter 3: Orphan Man With Top Hat

Pat's House

After your phonecall from Claire, head downstairs and talk to your father. Now leave the house and drive to the police station.

The Office

Get in the elevator and go down to level B2, then through the double doors into the morgue. After briefly seeing Claire, head back towards the lifts and into the security room opposite. Look at the monitors, then watch the long cutscene. Return into the morgue and talk to Claire once more to learn about the photograph. Return to the elevator and go up to level 8. After your phonecall, head towards your office and your boss will demand to see you (after you get him a coffee). Look at your desk and take the pictures of the 5th crime scene, then leave the office.

Go to the end of the hall and enter the interrogation room on the right. Pick up the coffee mug, then return to the hall. Look at the coffee machine - put the mug on the shelf and press the button, then pick up the mug again. Head into the office leading off yours and talk to your boss. After the meeting, talk to Miller again, then head down to your car and drive to the new location.

Campus

Go inside and up the staircase. Knock on the first door to the right and you will go inside to interview Kolar. After he leaves to get a printout of his thesis, pick up a beer bottle from near the armchair. When you've got the printout, go back to your car and return to the station.

The Office

Go down to the morgue and talk to Claire, then go up to your office. Look at the desk along the back wall to see Claire's equipment. Put the beer bottle on the desk, then open the container of powder. Pick up the brush and dip it in the powder, then use it on the bottle. Turn the bottle until a full print is visible, then pick up a piece of white paper from the roll and use it on the fingerprint. Grab the bottle again, then head back to the morgue. Talk to Claire and you will give her the evidence. Head back to your car again.

Pat's House

Go into the kitchen to make the cookies:

  • Half cup of butter, full cup of milk, full cup of brown sugar, use the blender
  • 2 full cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of ginger, use the blender
  • 1 egg, half cup of molasses, use the blender
  • Put the mixture in the oven

If you got the mixture right, you will tell your dad the cookies are in the oven. Head upstairs into your bedroom.

Chapter 4: Jack the Ripper's Bedroom

Junkyard

During the opening conversation you will receive a sketch and learn about Mark. Leave the junkyard and head to Mark's place.

Mark's Place

Go inside and talk to Mark, who will suggest talking to Skalnic.

Police Station

Head inside and talk to Stasek, who will let you through. Go out the back and up the stairs, then into Detective Skalnic's office. Talk to Skalnic, who will kick you out. Talk to Stasek again - he won't let you back into the office, but suggests talking to the workers outside. Head outside and go around the side of the building. Try to climb up the scaffolding using the rope and it will come free in your hands. Combine the rope with the piece of wood over to the right, then use your grappling hook on the scaffolding to get into the office. Pick up the keys from the desk and use these to unlock the filing cabinet. You will get a ring and 2 photographs, and end up back outside. Return to your car and go to the bridge.

Bridge

Head down the stairs and you will learn that Ida is pregnant. Use the photograph of the bridge murder scene and you can switch between the photo and the current view. Click on the middle bench in the photo and you will notice they have been replaced. Head back up the stairs and then go back to the junkyard.

Junkyard

Talk to Peter and he will reveal the discarded benches. Look at them and pick up the ring, then drive to the burned neighborhood.

Burned Neighborhood

Head right and compare the photograph with the current scene - click on the water trough in the photograph to notice the water has been drained. You will then see a message carved into the base of the trough: "the slut knows". Leave this area and head to the park.

Park

Talk to Milena, who says she saw Skalnic throw something into the sewers. Return to the burned neighborhood.

Burned Neighborhood

Head right again and move the round sewer cover to head down into the sewers. Pick up the ring, then climb back up. As you leave this area, Milena will ask you to go back to Mark's place.

Mark's Place

Knock on the door, then use your lockpicking tools on the door. After reading the instructions, this is the way to beat the lock (after each point, switch the tool you are using):

Look at the paintings on the wall. Take the book from the table, then walk towards the back of the studio. Look at the couch to see some fresh blood, and pick up the telegram. Now leave the building and head to the police station.

Police Station

Enter the building and head straight up to Skalnic's office.

Chapter 5: The Garden of Earthly Delights

Pat's House

After you wake up and talk to Miller, leave the house and go to the campus.

Campus

Go upstairs and knock on Kolar's door, then you will go inside. Go into his bedroom and look at the pictures on the walls, then leave the apartment again. You will talk to Mia on the way out and get her business card, then Tate will arrive to guard the door. Leave the building and get into your car, then drive to the new location on your map.

Red Lantern

Enter the building and you will go up in the elevator. Talk to the bouncer, who won't let you in without a pass. Go back down in the elevator and travel back to campus.

Campus

Go upstairs and talk to Tate, then head down the corridor and knock on Mia's door. When she leaves, go into her bedroom. Look at the photographs on her bed, then when you spot the photo of the girl, Mia will come back. After you talk to Mia about the photo, leave the building and drive to the new location on your map.

Richard's Gallery

Head inside and you will discover another murder scene. Look at the purse on the ground, and pick up Stephanie's Red Lantern pass. Also look at the silver rose, but it is stuck beneath the elevator. Now go over to the body and take the photograph of Mia. Try to open the gate over to the left where Mia went, but the chain will come free - pick it up. Head back up in the elevator, then use the chain on the hook to get back down to the basement level. Pick up the silver rose, then leave this area and your boss will arrive. Go outside, then back around to the gallery entrance. Talk to Richard, then take your photograph from the desk, before leaving the building.

The Office

Get out of your car and go straight up to level 8, where you will join an interrogation. After you leave the room, go into the office and look desk along the back wall. Use both the Red Lantern pass and your photo on the guillotine, then combine the two in your inventory to make a fake pass. Finally, use your pass in the plastifier to laminate it and make it look authentic. Leave the office and go back to the club.

Red Lantern

Head upstairs and show your pass to the bouncer to get inside. Look at the plaque on the wall with the six numbered buttons and the mysterious passage of writing. You don't know the correct combination yet, so go through to the next room. Look at the two paintings on the wall, but neither is relevant. Head east into a bath room and look at the painting called "Reminder" with the numbers 4-2; this matches the first part of the text "In my memoirs". Head west and then north to another bath room. Look at the back wall to see an ornate knife with the numbers 3-6; this matches the second part of the text "you shall find the instrument of my suffering". Take the silver mask and silver nail from the wall. Look at the painting to the right called "Dark Wedding" with the numbers 1-5; this matches the last part of the text "with which we celebrate our vows". Go back to the first room and enter the code 423615.

In the next room, look at each of the four statues, who ask for what they desire most. Look at the fruit bowl between them and pick up the half of the silver apple - you need to find the other half. Leave this building and drive back to the gallery.

Richard's Gallery

Head inside and ask Mia about the statues, and she will tell you she has the other half of the apple, then will give you the key. While you are here, head around the outside of the building and in to see Claire at the crime scene. After talking to her, get back in your car and drive to the campus.

Campus

Head upstairs and use the key to get into Mia's apartment. Go into the bedroom and look at the photo album again. Take the note and read it in your inventory - this gives you the correct order in which to use the statues. Pick up the top half of the silver apple and combine this with the other half. Leave the apartment and head back to the club again.

Red Lantern

Go into the statue room and use these objects on the statues (in this specific order):

  • Queen of Secrets - silver mask
  • Lady Temptation - silver apple
  • Baroness of Blood - silver rose
  • Mistress of Pain - silver nail

You will automatically head down the winding staircase to the level below. Go north into a room with a fireplace. Look at the fireplace and pick up the puzzle piece and the tip of a key. Also note the keyhole on the fireplace - you need to find the other half of the key to use it. Take note of the picture above the fireplace, then leave this room and go east. Go to the other fireplace and rearrange the puzzle pieces to match the picture from the first room, then insert the central piece to reveal a hidden shelf. Pick up the key handle and combine this with your other key piece. Go back to the first fireplace and use the key in the keyhole. Go through to the next room and read the book.

Chapter 6: The Scream

Police Station

Leave the police station and you will talk to Stasek. Go to your car and drive to the shore.

Shore

Head down the stairs and all the way west until you find a boat. Use this to reach the old lavatory. Try opening the door, but it is locked, so climb up the waterwheel instead. Follow the wooden path and look at the body, and you will take another ring before automatically going through a door to escape gunfire. Climb down the stairs and look at the sign on the wall - you need to end up with 4 measures of water in the main tank. Put the bucket under the tank, then turn the top tap and then the bottom tap. Empty the bucket. Turn the bottom tap, then the top tap, then the bottom tap again, and you will have 4 measures in the tank. Press the button and you will see water draining from the pool near the body. Climb up twice, then go around the pool and climb down into the sewers.

Go through the passage and you will find a maze of sewers. First you need to go roughly northwest, then around to the east, south and finally west and you will find another body. Search the body to get one final ring. Go back around to where you entered, then head east and around to the lit area. You now need to put each of the six rings in one of the six slots - number the six rings across the top of the screen 1-6, and place them in these positions:

  • ring 1 - top middle
  • ring 2 - bottom left
  • ring 3 - top left
  • ring 4 - top right
  • ring 5 - bottom right
  • ring 6 - bottom middle

Now you have to solve another sliding puzzle to get the pieces of the key to the top of the board, then push the pieces across to the right into the lock.

Chapter 7: Death Do Us Part

Richard's Gallery

After you go through the Ackerman paintings, talk to Mia and Richard. Go to the middle of the exhibit and look at the book, then head outside and drive to the police station.

The Office

While in the carpark, take the yellow fire extinguisher. Now get in the elevator and you will automatically arrive in your office. Claire will suggest a way to get improved computer access. After she leaves, go out to the hallway and use a tissue on the machine, then press the button. Return to the office and tell the janitor about the mess, then steal his keys and screwdriver. Use the keys to get into the back office belonging to your boss. Grab the taser from the side table, then look at the safe - you need a fingerprint. Look at the main desk and try the computer, then pick up the coffee mug.

Leave his office and go to the back desk. Repeat the procedure to extract prints from the mug (open the powder container, pick up the brush, get powder on the brush then use it on the mug, then use a piece of paper on the print). Go back into your boss's office and use the piece of paper on the safe to open it. Take the key, then return to the elevator. Use the key and press the B3 button to reach the archives level.

Use the screwdriver to open the panel on the wall, then use the taser on the exposed wires and the doors will open. Enter the security room and open the vent near the floor using your screwdriver. Use the computer, and press the release button, then one of the arrow buttons. In the next room, you can control the robot using the arrow keys - make the robot climb up the door and aim at the security panel, and the door will be unlocked. Leave this room and go through the previously locked door. Use your fire extinguisher in here to reveal sweeping laser beams. Go back to the security room and release another robot and send it into the other room. Now you need to control the robot to get over the tiled floor, avoiding the laser beams. Start from the middle of the safe area, facing the tiles. Each of these moves takes you to an area you are about to enter a dangerous tile:

  • Forward x2
  • Turn left, forward x3
  • Forward, turn right, forward, turn left, forward, turn right
  • Forward, left, forward x2, right, forward, left, forward
  • Right, forward x2, left, forward x2, left, forward x2, right
  • Forward, forward, forward

The robot will now destroy another panel. Get up from the computer and go through the laser area, which is now deactivated. Enter the archives and use the computer. After you get caught by your boss, leave the station and drive home.

Pat's House

Head upstairs and to the end of the hall to find the study. Look at the back of the painting to notice an unusual lump. Head downstairs to the living room and go right into the jacuzzi. Pick up the knife from in front of the toolbox on the floor, then go back up to the painting. Use the knife on the painting and you will find some interesting documents. Leave the room and you will get a call from Claire. Leave the house and drive to the campus.

Campus

Head upstairs and you will be under attack. After the cutscene, head back down to your car and drive to the gallery.

Richard's Gallery

Walk around the gallery and look at each of the paintings. Some of them will let you look at specific details, and will display words as you notice them. Once you have been right around the gallery, go back to the desk out the front and use the computer. Combine the words "Prague", "Chicago" and "bridge", and conduct a search and you will find a new location to visit. Go out to your car and drive to the Tominova Bridge to complete the game.
