Escape from Kyoto House is a first person escape room puzzle game with a Japanese theme. It can be played as a solo or cooperative experience. There are two modes, with different puzzles, and with the ability to lose lives in the Horror Mode. The series continues with Escape from Skull Dungeon.

Normal Mode

First Room

Start by pushing a book near the left end of the bookcase immediately to your right, which will open the stairway. Along the wall leading up the stairs and at the top are some useful Japanese numbers and words. There are also four animal blocks that you need to arrange in the correct order. Back downstairs you will find a maze on a piece of paper, in the opposite corner of the room from the base of the stairs. Solve this to get the correct animal order, then return upstairs and enter it: lion, sheep, cow, pig. Inside the upstairs compartment that opens, pick up a key (1/4), and insert it into the large safe downstairs. You will also find a framed flag of Japan (Green).

Back downstairs examine the computer and press the button on the computer tower to eject a disk indicating that the normal phone needs information from a mobile phone. Look at the bookcase just to the left and push another secret book to reveal another stairway. Go up here to see some more useful Japanese numbers. There is a picture at the top of the stairs with a red triangle and 3 red fish. There is also a book with a picture of a mobile phone and the old multi-tap form of SMS text entry. Press the button on the computer tower to eject another disk, which shows the flags of Europe (Eu) and France (Fr), and a periodic table on the back. Move the mouse on this computer to show a large periodic table on the wall. The flags on the disk correspond with the elements Europium (63) and Francium (87), so you can open the safe here with the code 6387. Inside this safe, pick up another key (2/4) and insert it into the large safe downstairs. You will also find a framed flag of Mexico (Yellow).

Head over to the table next to the large safe to find a book with a Sudoku puzzle. Solve this to find that the black square is 2. You already know that the red triangle is 3, and the Japanese numbers here are 9 and 4. There is also an image of chopsticks on this book. Go to the dining area and move one of the chopsticks to reveal another safe. Enter the code 2394. Inside this safe, pick up another key (3/4) and insert it into the large safe. You will also find a mobile phone with a code on the back that you can translate from multi-tap to read "one five two eight".

Go over to the old phone on the desk opposite and enter the number 1528. This will cause the mobile phone to ring and display a 4-digit number. Go to the safe near the old phone and enter the code 5761. Inside this safe, pick up another key (4/4) and insert it into the large safe. You will also find a framed flag of South Africa (Red). Now the large safe should be open, and inside you will find a yin and yang symbol. Pick this up and insert it on the side of the large cabinet to the right. This will reveal a panel with 4 colored cubes. The colors match the backgrounds of the 3 framed flags, and there is a fourth framed flag inside a drawer near the large safe - Sweden (Blue). You need to adjust the colors of the cubes to the relative positions of the countries on the world map on the wall here:

  • North: Sweden (Blue)
  • West: Mexico (Yellow)
  • East: Japan (Green)
  • South: South Africa (Red)

The large cabinet will open, but it will be empty. Press the button on the outside of the cabinet to turn on a light inside, then you can see in the top left corner there is a small button to press. Head down the stairs to the next room.

Second Room

Look in the bottom drawer to find a map of the pond, and the numbers one to four. You need to count the number of lily pads in each of the four sections of the pond. Go to the wall panel and enter the code 6329. Go through to find a computer.

Move the mouse and you will see two pictures displayed on the left monitor. These look like the two pairs of paintings on the walls in the main room. Examine these and you will see the first painting has a boat missing from its right version, and the second painting has a flower missing from its right version. Look at the book on the top of the chest of drawers to see that boat is 66 and flower is 26. Go to the safe and enter the code 6626. Inside the safe, pick up a USB drive and insert it in the top of the computer to see the Japanese words for water, earth, wind and fire, all displayed on the right monitor.

On the floor on a raised platform near the main door, you will find a large disc with these four words. You need to collect the symbols and place them on the correct words:

  • Water: Inside the top drawer
  • Earth: On the ground near the edge of the pond
  • Wind: On the desk in the computer room
  • Fire: Inside the safe

Drop down the hole and collect the key, then follow the stairs up and press the button at the end. Drop back down into the main room, then use the key on the lock next to the main door. Go through and get into the boat.
