A Rite of the Stars is a 3rd person exploratory point and click adventure game. You play as Kirm, a mute child who must undergo his tribal rite of passage to become a man. You must follow the 3 Paths of Wisdom, Courage and Spirit, and solve their unique challenges. There are 48 Steam Achievements, all documented in the walkthrough below. Once you have finished each of the Paths, you can replay the individual sections to get missing achievements.

The Island of Kaikala

Follow the Guiding Star to the right and touch the yellow balloon plant. Keep following to see a conversation between the Masters. Don't come out of hiding, but wait until you are discovered Bad Boy.

Makoa Sacred Grounds

Head to the far bottom left to find a goat glyph (1/10). Look at the 7 seagulls here. There is an achievement for interacting with them, and clicking on them to recreate the whistling tune from the Otis Redding classic - if they are numbered 1-7 from left to right, click on them in the order 6, 5, 7, 5, 4, 3 Remember the dock on the bay and play that song....

Cross over the mural in the river and towards Kekoa. Look in the tree behind him to find a mystical leaf (1/10). Backtrack a little and go up the stairs on the left. Talk to Ailani, the Chief, and you will follow him towards the Temple of Yesterday.

Path of Wisdom

Entrance to the Temple of Yesterday

Knock on all of the urns around this area and listen to the sounds they make - two of them will sound different to the others, with a lower pitch. In a small bricked area near the far left, find a mystical leaf (2/10) on top of the left wall.

Go back to a small palm tree near Ailani and look at tree, then try to pick it up - you will look confused and question marks will appear above your head. Repeat this 100 times Wut?. Now look at the coconut in the tree and try to pick it up. After Ailani says to use your head, click on the tree again Use your head!. Next go to where Ailani is standing and examine the throne, then pick up the knife. Go towards the water and find some reeds on the left; cut them with the knife, then pick up the reed. Set the tip of the reed on fire using one of the torches, then use the lit reed on the mud-covered stone stake statues near the water.

Return to the palm tree and pick up the fallen coconut. Use this to break only the 2 urns that sounded different to the others. Pick up the stone tongues from the 2 pots you have smashed, and insert them into the stone snake statues. Once both are inserted, a bridge will rise and you will enter the temple. There is an achievement if you only break 2 pots to find the stone tongues A Kirm between pots.

Hall of Mirrors

In this room there are 6 stands set around the central fire pit. There are 4 mirrors that you can pick up and place on these stands, and each of the mirrors has a colored symbol on its back. Four of the stands have light beams shining towards them. You need to position the gongs on these 4 stands, then click on them to direct their colored light downwards. You also need to work out which position to place each different colored gong. Start with them in this order from left to right: green, yellow, red, blue Super Kirmtendo. Now switch them around to this order from left to right: red, green, blue, yellow. After the door opens, head through.

Hall of the Switching Ladders

Run up the staircase and take the mallet, then head back down again. There are 2 gongs on the left, and there are 3 glyphs on the ground in front of the staircase, each corresponding to one of the 3 staircase sections. By activating the glyphs, you select which segments are affected by hitting the gongs. Your goal is to switch the staircase around so you can climb up to the left. If you look carefully you can spot a goat glyph (2/10) on the wall behind the middle segment. Now follow these instructions:

  1. Activate left and right, hit left gong
  2. Activate right, hit left gong
  3. Activate middle and right, hit right gong
  4. Activate right, hit right gong

Now climb the stairs and swap your mallet for a stone tongue. Climb back down and insert this into the stone snake statue. Climb back up and get your mallet. Now you need to reverse the staircase again, by using these instructions:

  1. Activate left, middle and right, hit left gong
  2. Hit right gong
  3. Activate left and middle, hit left gong
  4. Hit right gong
  5. Hit right gong
  6. Activate middle, hit left gong
  7. Hit right gong
  8. Hit right gong

Climb the stairs and go through the open doorway. There is an achievement for hitting the gong less than 15 times Gong Hero.

Hall of the Wall of The Ancients

Find a mystical leaf (3/10) on the left wall. Go straight across to the opposite door, but it will close in front of you - make sure you look at the door. Press the buttons on the bases of the 3 statues, then go down the stairs. Look at 3 places on each of the 3 segments of the mural Civilopedia. Pick up the piece of the volcano on the right section of the mural, then use this on the door.

Dark Maze

Explore each of the passages and you will find 4 orbs. Next to where you get the one from the short southern passage, you will find a goat glyph (3/10). Pick up each of the 4 orbs and return them to the 4 pedestals in the starting room. A torch will appear, and you have 2 options to proceed:

  • Pick up the torch: Each time you stop in an intersection, the flame will quickly blow in the correct direction to continue. You will reach a closed door with a message about lava. Stand on the small patch of floor just to the right without the fire symbols on the ground and the door will open. Keep going until you reach another closed door with a message about keeping moving. Run around in circles without stopping here until the door opens. When you reach the third closed door, just put your torch in the holder.
  • Don't pick up the torch: You can solve the maze in the relative dark. If you choose to do this, you won't need to worry about the riddles at other closed doors; they will be open for you Alone in the Dark (well, almost).

Either way, go along the glowing hallway and through the doorway at the end.

Hall of the Four Statues

Look at the pictures on the 2 doors in this room - you need to work out a logical link between the two doors, then place the statues on the grid on the floor. There are multiple different puzzles that will cycle, with two of them shown below (left door, right door, solution):

Since the meerkat statue is apparently broken, just stand on the green square yourself. In the next room, talk to each of the spirits 3 times. Pick up the statue that neither of them mention, and place that on the platform at the end of the bridge. Go to the closed doors to find a goat glyph (4/10). Now try putting the broken meerkat statue on the platform. Finally put the statue that the more positive sounding spirit mentions Scientific Method. Talk to both spirits again. Try to cross the bridge, and the lying spirit will make you fall anyway Elementary, my dead Hoku.

Derelict Hall

Head to the right and you will see a platform with a group of body parts. Rearrange these so the 2 heads are on the left, follow by 3 torsos and finally 3 pair of legs OCD. Now find the pair of legs where the comment is "This idol piece reminds me of your tribe" and place it on the leg section in front of the gears to the right. Repeat this with the correct torso piece. Pick up the wooden mask to the right of the other body parts, and place it on the head section in front of the gears. Press the glyph to the right and you will create a Makoa idol. As it proceeds along the conveyor belt, walk in time with it. Once it is picked up by the giant snake, run right. Ignore the doorway and keep going right, then touch the mushroom (1/4). Now go back slightly and through the doorway. Continue up the next set of stairs.

The Temple of Yesterday Exterior

There are 2 idols here, and you need to try to carry them down the pyramid. Each idol can be used to unlock one red lock on each level of the pyramid. The instructions for each level are shown below:

  1. Pick up the golden idol and place it on the nearest lock, then turn it. Pick up the stone idol and place it on the nearest lock, then turn it. Pick up the stone idol and head downstairs to level 2.
  2. Pick up the stone idol and place it on the lock in front of the stone statue. Pick up the golden idol and place it on the lock in front of the golden statue. Go around to the right side and look down over the edge to find a goat glyph (5/10). Now go back and turn the golden idol, and the fire will begin. Turn the stone idol, then pick it up and head downstairs to level 3.
  3. Look at the murals on the wall and find the one showing the artisan sculpting a meerkat. Go around the side from that mural and place the stone idol on the lock in front of the artisan and child. Turn the stone idol. Now temporarily run back up to level 1 and wait here until the fire has gone well down the pyramid, so there is no more time pressure. Pick up the golden idol from level 2 and carry it down to level 3. Go to the opposite side, past a mural about a priest falling in love with a star. Place the golden idol on the lock in front of the priest reaching out to a star. Turn the golden idol, then pick it up and head downstairs to level 4.
  4. Look at the murals and go past the one about the priest building a stairway. Place the golden idol on the lock in front of the slaves bowing to the priest. Turn the golden idol. Go up and grab the stone idol, then bring it down to the opposite side, past a mural about a girl with her sculpture. Place the stone idol in front of the artisan crying at a table. Turn the stone idol, then pick it up and head downstairs to level 5.
  5. Look at the murals and go past the one about the meerkat statue coming to life. Place the stone idol on the lock in front of the artisan crafting at a table. Turn the stone idol. Go up and grab the golden idol, then bring it down to the opposite side, past a mural about the star awakening. Place the golden idol in front of the priest huddled near the star. Turn the golden idol, then pick it up and head downstairs to level 6.
  6. Place the golden idol on one of the locks. Go up and get the stone idol and place it on the other lock Two Stories. Turn the golden idol The Golden Rule.

Makoa Sacred Grounds

Ailani will congratulate you for completing the Path of Wisdom Wise. You can now replay any of the sections of this path to collect missing achievements. Once you are done, talk to Kekoa, the First Hunter, and you will follow him into the Jungle of Kaikala.

Path of Courage

Kaikala Jungle Entrance

Touch the red plant to make the yellow one appear. Move Mirk over next to the blue plant. Have Kirm touch the yellow plant, then get Mirk to quickly run right through the fallen tree. Get Mirk to touch the yellow plant here, and a blue bridge will form nearby. Get Kirm to cross over the bridge and touch the far right yellow plant so Mirk can quickly go a bit further. Now have Kirm touch the yellow plant just to the left, and Mirk can come around and join him. Both of you can now head to the right.

Get Mirk to climb up the vines and touch the yellow plant to launch Kirm to the right over the gap.Get Mirk to go to the right, timing his passage past 2 purple plants, and walking safely through the poison gas. Have Mirk touch the yellow plant, then quickly get Mirk and Kirm to both run right past the yellow and blue plants respectively - they will now both be in line with some vines. Have Kirm go right and touch the red plant to make 2 yellow plants appear nearby. Get Mirk past his next purple plant, so he is blocked by 2 blue plants. Now get Kirm to touch both of his yellow plants, and get Mirk to dash past the 2 blue plants while they are gone. Get him past the next purple plant. Have Mirk touch the high yellow plant, then quickly get Mirk and Kirm to both run right past the yellow and blue plants respectively. Before proceeding further, click on the mystical leaf (4/10) just below the bottom ledge here.

Mirk now needs to cross over a purple bridge formed by 4 purple plants. Position Kirm next to the first yellow plant and touch it as soon as the 4 purple plants are inflated, then quickly get Mirk to run over the entire bridge to the next platform. Mirk should now stand right next to the closed blue plant, then Kirm can touch the other yellow plant to propel him over the gap. Move Kirm next to the final closed blue plant, and get Mirk to touch the right yellow plant so the two are reunited once more. Finally, have Mirk run through the poison and touch the yellow plant, then keep going, and have Kirm run through the poison area before it becomes active again.

There is an achievement for completing this section by only touching up to 15 plants Survivalist.

Kaikala Jungle

Get Mirk to trigger the poison, then have Kirm walk safely to the ledge. Now Mirk should climb up the vines into the tree and stand near the yellow plant. Have Kirm shoo the firefly so that it triggers the next poison, then when it is safe, Mirk should touch his yellow plant to propel Kirm over the gap. Quickly move Kirm out of the poison area and get Mirk to run to the right end of his branch. Now Kirm can touch his yellow plant to launch Mirk off the branch on to the next ledge. Both of you can now head to the right.

Have Kirm touch his yellow plant, then move both Kirm and Mirk forward. Now Kirm can shoo another firefly to activate the upcoming red plant, and can move forward past the deflated blue plant. Get Mirk to touch his nearest yellow plant, then run forward past both of them and stand next to the row of blue plants. Get Kirm to touch both of the yellow plants and move forward past them to stand near the poison, while getting Mirk to run past the 4 deflated blue plants. Mirk can now shoo the firefly here to trigger the bottom poison - wait for it to disperse, then walk Kirm forward past it. Get Mirk to touch the next yellow plant and walk both Kirm and Mirk past their deflated plants. Shoo Mirk's firefly to trigger the poison, then wait for it to disperse before shooing Kirm's firefly and running both characters to the right.

Move Mirk over to the end of his ledge, then get Kirm to touch the first yellow plant so Mirk can run over the temporary bridge to the right. Run Mirk half way down the slope to find a firefly and shoo it to make another temporary bridge - quickly have Kirm run over this to the right. Have Mirk trigger the poison, then both of can head to the right.

There is an achievement for completing this section by only touching up to 8 plants Seasoned Survivalist.

Kaikala Jungle Depths

In this section you need to dodge coconuts being thrown by a monkey, by moving between hiding places. Since Mirk is faster than Kirm, he can more quickly reach his next hiding place, while Kirm must be more careful and often use the monkey's delay in picking up his next coconut to help move safely.

Start by moving Kirm to the left; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move him forward to the next position. Now get Mirk to move right (he won't be seen). Get Mirk to move forward; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then get both characters up to the first wall.

Move Mirk up to the first rock; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm forward as well. Next move Mirk to the right rock; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm to the left rock. Move Mirk up to the second wall; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm up to the second wall as well.

Move Mirk to the right rock; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm left. Move Mirk forward to the tree; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm forward to his tree. Move Mirk up to the third wall; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm up to the third wall as well.

Move Mirk to the right; wait for the coconut to be thrown, then quickly move Kirm forward. The monkey will likely thrown a second coconut at Kirm, so quickly move both characters to the fourth wall.

Before moving anywhere, click on the mystical leaf (5/10) on the tree to the left. Now start by moving Kirm to the left rock; run Mirk up to the right wall as the coconut is being thrown. Move Kirm to the left tree; run Mirk to the monkey as the coconut is being thrown - he will be kidnapped. There is an achievement for reaching the monkey before he is able to throw a total of 16 coconuts Rainbow Kirm.

Ruined Coliseum

In this section, the monkey is pulling bars in his cage to collapse sections of the floor. There is a mystical leaf (6/10) on the right ledge. You need to run around avoiding the collapsing floor segments and shooing the fireflies to inflate the 2 bottom yellow plants. Now touch both of these in quick succession to knock the monkey down to the ground. Immediately move Mirk into the cage and move Kirm away from the monkey, then get Mirk to use the bars in the cage. If you manage to do this almost instantly, before the monkey can pull the bars on his cage 3 times, you will get an achievement Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Cliff of Courage

Find a mystical leaf (7/10) in the background of this level. Put Kirm in the left stone circle, and Mirk in the middle stone circle. Wait for a strong gust of wind, and then jump off the edge.

The Beast's Cave

Touch the mushroom (2/4) on the right. Find another goat glyph (6/10) behind a tree on the left, then touch another mushroom (3/4) on the left. Now continue forward through the cave.

The Antechamber of The Beast

Jump Mirk over to the right stone pillar and wait there. Now jump Kirm over to the right stone pillar; when it leans to the right, get both to jump to the opposite ledge.

Next jump Mirk right twice and wait there. Jump Kirm over to the same pillar and it will lean to the right. For the next part, Mirk should always be one pillar ahead of Kirm, so should start jumping twice before Kirm jumps once and follows. Head right 5 times, then down and right to a larger pillar. Have Kirm jump on to this pillar as well, and it will lean to the right. Now quickly have both characters jump right twice to reach the next ledge.

There is another goat glyph (7/10) behind the glowing stones on this ledge. Jump both characters right and the pillar will lean to the right. As in the last part, move Mirk one pillar ahead of Kirm. Head up twice and right 3 times to reach a larger pillar. Have Kirm jump on this one as well so that it leans. Continue with Mirk in front, going right twice, down twice and right twice. Have Kirm jump on to this large pillar to lean it, then use the same procedure to go right, up and right. Lean this pillar to the right, then continue right 5 times. Lean this pillar to the right, then go right twice more and jump to the final ledge. Continue to the right.

There are two possible achievements from this section, either collapsing less than 34 stone pillars Geological heritage conservator, or collapsing at least 50 stone pillars I didn't do it; you will need to replay this section later if you want to get both of these.

The Beast's Den

Make your way to the right. Use Mirk to scout out the poison areas to find which ones are safe, then have Kirm step on these ones. You also need to dodge out of the way of falling boulders by watching for their shadows. You will eventually reach the beast, who is sleeping for the moment.

Throughout this section, whenever the beast has his eyes open you must stay still to avoid being seen. This will happen every time the boulders fall, as well as some extra times. Send Mirk over to the right and touch the bottom left yellow plant, then move Kirm past the first blue plant, which will open again after a delay. You now need to gradually close the remaining 4 large blue plants, which will stay closed permanently. Each time, you must touch the bottom right yellow plant, followed by one of the two that open at the top, followed by one new one that opens. Remember to keep dodging the boulders and stop moving whenever the beast's eyes are open.

Once all 4 blue plants are closed, move Kirm right up next to the beast (while its eyes are closed), and the view will rotate around to the right. Wait until the beast falls asleep once more, then run beneath it and grab the mask. Once the view switches again, gradually move Mirk to the right while the beast's eyes are closed, and you will reach Kirm again. Have Kirm stand on the nearest part of the narrow platform, then send Mirk out to retrieve the mask.

On the next view you will be right in front of the beast. Don't move, just stand there and you will be safe. There is an achievement for dying less than 5 times within the Beast's Den Being brave is not only a matter of luck.

Makoa Sacred Grounds

Kekoa will congratulate you for completing the Path of Courage Courageous. You can now replay any of the sections of this path to collect missing achievements. Once you are done, talk to Waha Nui, the Shaman, and you will follow him towards the Spirit World.

Path of Spirit

The Rock of Destiny

Start by touching Waha Nui's pot 10 times Electromasochistic. Now you need to leave the rock by going to the right. Make your way over the cobweb of platforms, avoiding the spirits. Switch worlds again and shoo all 4 of the fireflies, so they make their way up to the constellation display on top of the temple ahead.

Switch worlds but don't go through the main temple door; instead come back to a side doorway to the right of where you entered this cavern. Switch worlds and click on the goat glyph (8/10), then switch worlds and go back through the doorway. Now head through the temple doorway (remember the star pattern shown above the door). There is a tricky path through a maze of doors ahead:

  • Go back through the doorway you came out, then go through that same doorway again
  • At the choice of 3 doors, go back through the entry door again

After meeting Pohaku, head left and read the sign, then go through the doorway. Look at where Beaverpher is floating in this next area. Switch worlds and go over to him, then switch back and you will talk (if you aren't close enough, just move to him again). Once the quiz show starts, switch worlds and click on the test pattern to see a hidden screen. Now enter all of the codes that you can find on every screen. There are 50 codes in total, and one of the screens contains a goat glyph (9/10), but the codes are different each time you enter the spirit world.
